Thing 5: Diversity

An app (I can’t remember which one) recently insisted on showing me how I could change the skin colour of emoji. I was horrified and couldn’t imagine ever using that option. I’d always thought of the yellow smiley as race-neutral – yellow because it’s a happy colour. I couldn’t see why you’d want to bring skin colour into it. However, on reading the articles (Apple’s new diverse emoji are even more problematic than before and Yeah, Facebook Messenger’s New Diverse Emoji Actually Matter) I realise this was probably my white privilege and that many people want to express themselves using diverse emojis. Bitmoji has lots of appearance options, and seems like a good solution. Here’s mine:
